Line Striping Requirements for ADA Parking Compliance
If your parking lot is open to the public, federal ADA standards apply to your accessible parking — and the striping is a big part of compliance.
The number of accessible spaces scales with your lot size. Under the 2010 ADA Standards, a lot with 1–25 total spaces needs at least 1 accessible space; 26–50 spaces need 2; 51–75 need 3; 76–100 need 4. At least one of every six accessible spaces must be van-accessible.
Striping details matter: accessible spaces need an adjacent access aisle (typically 60 inches wide, or 96 inches for van-accessible spaces), clearly marked so vehicles can't park in it. Markings need to stay visible — faded blue paint and worn hatch marks can put you out of compliance even if the layout was right years ago.
Signage goes with the striping: each accessible space needs a sign with the International Symbol of Accessibility, and van spaces need a 'Van Accessible' designation. Signs belong in front of the space, mounted high enough to be seen over a parked vehicle.
The Lot Doctor stripes ADA-compliant spaces, access aisles, crosswalks and directional markings for commercial properties across central Oklahoma. Line striping carries a $350 minimum mobilization, with every lot quoted custom. Call 405-303-0112 to talk through your lot.
